Healing through connection
A decades-old collection of children’s paintings gives new perspectives on the residential school experience—and adds hope for making things right. 葡萄京官方首页 visual anthropologist Andrea Walsh works in collaboration with First Nations on Vancouver Island in a community-led research project that focuses on the children’s paintings from the Alberni Indian Residential School, 1959 to 1966.
Victoria Hand Project
The "Victoria Hand" is a project of the 葡萄京官方网站’s Biomedical Design and Systems Laboratory. Led by Dr. Nikolai Dechev, the Victoria Hand Project (VHP) is a not-for-profit that’s designing and distributing low-cost ($350), high-functioning, upper limb 3D-printed prostheses to people in need. Working with organizations which have established relationships on the ground in Guatemala (Range of Motion Project) and Nepal (Kathmandu Orthopaedic Hospital), Joshua Coutts—BEng ’14—is a research associate for ongoing field trials. TreeRover, the tree-planting robot
Many students spend their summers tromping through slash-piles and battling blackflies to replant Canada's forests. Two 葡萄京官方网站 engineering undergrads took a different approach: they built a tree-planting robot with the idea of supplementing the humans' hard work. “TreeRover" is the brainchild of two third year 葡萄京官方首页 electrical engineering students, Nick Birch and Tyler Rhodes. Small but mighty - studying marine phytoplankton
Diana Varela, a professor in the Department of Biology and School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, has studied phytoplankton for the past 20 years. Varela discusses how these lifeforms are the crux of ecosystems both aquatic and terrestrial, producing about half of Earth’s oxygen, cycling elements such as carbon, silicon and nitrogen throughout the ocean, all while providing a primary food source for marine animals.
